We often hear the about the glitz and glam about creating movies and tv shows but we never really hear about the impact of long days and being in constant hair and makeup. Jennifer Yen, founder of purlisse and former actress tells us at Maslow & Co a little bit about what it was like and why quitting acting became the catalyst for her to create the purlisse brand we know and love today.
Before purlisse, I was an actress in the popular television series, Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue! I played the role of Vypra, the villainess, which was a very exciting time in my life. Today, I am a mother to a beautiful 3-year-old little girl and run my own beauty business, as known as purlisse. The purlisse brand is special because it’s helped so many women, including myself, with all types of skin issues. It is a growing brand that I am very proud of and excited to see how it will help many more.
Being on Power Rangers was a very exciting time in my life, especially playing the villainess Vypra! The downside was we filmed for more than 15 hours a day and I had very heavy makeup on throughout my time being there. This ultimately wrecked my skin and made me develop rosacea, psoriasis, adult acne and hives. My skin suffered and so did my confidence. That is when I went on the search to find skin products that would help my skin, but I tried everything and unfortunately, nothing worked. This is when I rediscovered my grandmother’s Asian beauty wisdom and created purlisse beauty.
We work very closely with our labs and make sure to test out all the samples in order to give our customers the best. We are very picky with how we want our products to turn out, which is why we go through a trial and error process multiple times, so the final product comes out perfect! We have a strong design team that helps with the packaging designs which is always so much fun watching creative ideas turn into reality.
In the mornings, I love to wash my face with our BLUE LOTUS 4-in-1 Cleansing Milk then do a quick mask. At purlisse we have multiple masks, but in the mornings I love to do a BLUE LOTUS Seed Mud Mask + Exfoliant, just so my face is a smooth palette for whatever moisturizers and makeup I want to put on. After the 10-minute mask, I’ll usually moisturize my face with the BLUE LOTUS Essential Daily Moisturizer then use the BLUE LOTUS Brightening Serum. Lastly, I’ll usually just use my ‘Medium’ shade BB Tinted Moist Cream and the Daily Lip Nourisher, then do my usual makeup look - liner, mascara, brows, a little blush, a little highlighter and a pop of lip! At night, I’ll go back and use the BLUE LOTUS 4-in-1 Cleansing Milk - washing off all the makeup I used during the day. After, I use one of our Sheet Masks then moisturize with the BLUE LOTUS Essential Daily Moisturizer and the Eye Adore Serum to treat under my eyes throughout the night!
When I was younger, my grandmother had an amazing home recipe where she would boil soy milk and we would wash our face with it, it helped keep the face moisturized, which is where we got the Cleansing Milk idea from for purlisse! Another trick she would do is boil the blue lotus and drink it as tea, to relieve stress, which ultimately leads to better skin.
An insider trick for the BLUE LOTUS Mud Mask + Exfoliant is to wash your face with mildly warm water or take a warm bath/shower to open up your pores before applying the mask. Having your pores open help penetrate the mask to exfoliate and clean out toxins in your skin better. Rub lightly the mask into your skin then keep mask on for 10-minutes. Lastly, wash your face with cold water, so that your pores close. Another trick is using ut as a spot treatment. You can use the mask on a single blemish on your face to dry it out. After doing the same as you would if you were to do a full face mask, then wash the mask off. Your skin should feel smooth and refreshed after!
